Ready, Set, Go to Run the Walks
RUN THE WALKS offers you the chance to run – or walk – in the tracks of champions on Newmarket Heath, taking in the magnificent views from Warren Hill, and then following Newmarket’s famous Horse Walks to the finishing post.
Newmarket is known as the Home of Horseracing, and has been at the centre of Thoroughbred training for over 350 years. It has a beautiful natural setting and a wealth of Grade II listed buildings.
There are stables dotted throughout the town, and every morning strings of racehorses can be seen walking out to the Gallops along the network of Horse Walks that criss-cross the town.
Newmarket Heath is the largest expanse of cultivated heath land in the world, and a site of special scientific interest which is home to rare chalk land plants, insects and birds.
It was James I who, in February 1604, first recognised the Heath’s potential as ‘prime sporting country’, and in doing so, changed the history of Newmarket forever.
The beautiful setting which we enjoy today has been shaped and protected over the last 350 years as the Heath has developed into the world’s premier training grounds for thoroughbred racehorses; we are grateful to Jockey Club Estates for permission to set our course across this unique landscape.
